Development of Paediatric Care online UK

Multi-million pound transatlantic partnership set to transform paediatric knowledge and care.

The RCPCH, working closely with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and other key UK professional bodies, has been commissioned by the Department of Health to deliver an innovative programme to improve the safety of child healthcare.

PCO UK is a UK version of the American Academy of Pediatrics's (AAP) successful Pediatric Care Online tool, which supports primary care providers in the US.

About PCO UK

PCO UK will enhance and support daily practice by providing immediate, accessible information to inform decisions at point of care, together with a repository of supporting reference material and patient/carer information.

It will offer a suite of 'Key Practice Point' decision support tools that cover common signs and symptoms and critical care situations. These will provide clinically assured advice and guidance incorporating National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance where available.

These tools are based on original US content derived from the AAP Textbook of Paediatric Care, modified for UK use following a rigorous editorial and review process by the UK specialist and primary care community. US content has been replaced by national UK guidance, where available.

Other PCO UK content will include the British National Formulary for Children (BNFC) and Public Health England’s Green Book on immunisations against infectious disease.

Who PCO UK is for

PCO UK is relevant for all healthcare professionals who see children at the ‘point-of-first contact’ in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

This includes general practitioners (GPs), Emergency Department teams, practice nurses, children’s nurses, health visitors and paramedics.
